Bronze 50 mm medallion (Bramsen 76) Attempt on the Life of Napoleon (designed by H. Auguste), from 1800. The obverse has the bust of Napoleon facing left and the caption: AMOUR DU PEUPLE FRANÇAISE POUR LE PREMIER CONSUL. ATTENTATE A LA VIE DE BONAPARTE 3 NIVOSE AN 9, DE LA REP. The reverse has the inscription: LES CITOYENS VOLENT EN FOULE VERS LUI. AMIS CE N’EST PAS `A MOI QU’IL FAUT VENIR: QU’ON AILLE AU SECOURS DES MALHEUREUZ QUE LA MACHINE INFERNAL A PU FRAPPER. This medallion commemorates the attempt on Napoleon’s life by the so-called ‘infernal machine’ as he was headed to the opera. I’d put this medallion as ‘about uncirculated (AU).’ The differing patina shows up far more in the scan than in the actual medal, and the white dots are a reflection of my lack of dust control! The obverse has a stunning bust of Napoleon as First Consul.

Please note that there are many reproductions and restrikes, but this is an original medallion from 1800. ‘Bramsen’ refers to Bramsen, L. Medaillier Napoleon Le Grand, ou Description des Medailles, Cliches, Repousses et Medailles-Decorations Relatives aux Affaires de la France Pendant Le Consulat Et L'Empire.  (2 parts in one vol. French text.)  Hamburg: Peter Siemer, 1977. This is the definitive listing of all Napoleonic medallions.
