BICENTENNIAL
CALENDAR

T here
is no doubt that 1812 was one of the most eventful years in world history.
At the height of his power, Napoleon invaded Russia with 422,000 men.
He defeated the Russian Army and marched triumphantly into Moscow, only to
find himself isolated in a burned-out shell of a city with no supplies for
the winter. The Grande Armée's subsequent retreat back the way they had
come was one of the epic catastrophes of history. Scarcely
10,000 soldiers were still in ranks when the exhausted and frozen survivors
staggered across the border into Poland in January 1813.
The Napoleonic Historical Society is commemorating this bicentennial with
a special full-color calendar, offering a day-by-day unfolding of
the events of this momentous year, not only in Russia, but in Spain and
North America as well. Each day describes what happened on that day
in 1812, and each month is illustrated with a painting of
one of the great events of that memorable year.
